How did you get started?
When my husband retired in 2000, we decided
to do voluntary work together. We have been in-
volved in community organisations all our mar-
ried life and we felt the St Vincent de Paul Society
would be a worthwhile group to support.
What do you love about you role?
There are many lovely people involved in a vari-
ety of ways with the Society. As well as forming
friendships, I find it rewarding to be able to assist
someone to be in a better place, to turn tears into
a smile. I like to see people empowered to make
decisions that will improve their future.
Why is your Catholic faith important
to you?
I chose to become a Catholic 10 years after we were
married and had two small children. My faith is my
guide every day and I believe that my Society work
is putting my faith into action. People and relation-
ships are most important in life above all else.
What was your reaction when you
heard you were a finalist for The
Leaders?
I had seen them advertised, but I was initially sur-
prised when they phoned. I couldn’t believe that
someone had nominated me, but when I thought
about it, I saw it as a recognition of the work done
by the St Vincent de Paul Society which mostly goes
unnoticed.
